ABC” and “banana”

A professor of mine once told a story about when she went to the United States to study. A native links of london Eritrean, she had received a scholarship to pursue a bachelor’s degree at an American university. The university organized a trip to Disneyland for her and the other international students. Before links of london necklaces the group of international students went to Los Angeles, the coordinators of the trip informed the students from Africa that they should wear their “traditional” costumes, not Western-style clothing. Why? The coordinators were afraid that the African students would be “mistaken” for African-Americans simply because their skin color was also dark. At that time, the 1960s, there was still much overt racial discrimination against links of london earrings African-Americans. Insgroupsto avoid trouble, the coordinators wanted to make sure that their African students did not look African-American.

She ended her story by asking us to think about what we thought she was before we  links of london had met her. Her last name is Italian; did we think she was Italian? When we first saw her, did we assume that she was a black American? How much can we really know about a person based upon hair color, skin color, facial structure or body shape?

Identity is a difficult subject to discuss links of london sweeties bracelet because it is so personal, and it is even more difficult to describe someone’s identity clearly in a country like the USswheres just about everyone’s family came links of london bracelet from somewhere else. My professor, until she left Eritrea, always considered herself Eritrean. When she got to America, however, people looked at her and saw a black woman, not an Eritrean woman. Similarly, Japanese, Koreans and Chinese people come to the US and are often just called “Asians”. Appearance is used as the main condition for identity, although  links of london appearances can be quite deceiving.

British English, American English, the same language?

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

It was said by Sir George Bernard Shaw that “England and America are two countries separated by the same language.” My first links of london personal experience of this was when I worked as a camp counselor for two months in 2000 in s Summer Camp run by the Boy Scouts of America, as part of an international leader exchange scheme. Before I went, all the participants in the scheme were given a short list of words that are in common use in the UK which Americans would either be confused by or would even offend them. I memorized the words and links of london bracelet thought “I’ll cope”.

When I finally arrived in the States three months later, I realized that perhaps a lifetime of watching American television was not adequate preparation for appreciating and coping with the differences between American and British speech. In the first hour of arriving at the camp I was exposed to High School American English, Black American English and American English links of London necklace spoken by Joe Public, all every different to each other. Needless to say, I did cope in the end. The Americans I met were very welcoming and helpful, and I found they were patient with me when I made a social faux pas when I used an inappropriate word or phrase.

Upon my return I links of london charms began to wonder whether anyone had documented the differences between American and British English. I found several books on the subject but often these were written in a dry and academic way. I felt that I could do better and use my sense of humor and personal experiences to help people from both sides of Atlantic to communicate more effectively when they meet.

Firstly, American English and British English are covering thanks to increased transatlantic travel and the media. The movement of slang words is mostly eastwards, though a few words from the UK have been adopted by the Ivy links of london bracelet league fraternities. This convergent trend is a recent one dating from the emergence of Hollywood as the predominant film making center in the world and also from the Second World War when large numbers of American GIs were stationed in the UK. This trend was consolidated by the advent of television. Before then, it was thought that American English and links of london  British English would diverge as the two languages evolved. In 1789, Noah Webster, in whose name American dictionaries are still published to this day, stated that: “Numerous local causes, such as a new country, new associations of people, new combinations of ideas in the arts and some intercourse with tribes wholly unknown in Europe will introduce new words into the American tongue.” He was right, but his next statement has since been proved to be incorrect. “These causes will produce in the  links of london charms course of time a language in North America as different from the modern Dutch, Danish and Swedish are from the German or from one another.”

Big Turtle

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

Many years ago the world had two links of london parts.

Animals lived in the lower part, which was was completely covered in water and had no land or soil. Above was the Sky World, where the sky people lived.

The Sky World had lots of soil, with beautiful mountains and valleys. One day a girl links of london friendship bracelet from the Sky World went for a long walk and became very tired.

“I’m so tired, I need to rest” she said. She sat down under the spreading branches of an apple tree and quickly fell asleep.

Suddenly, there was a rumbling sound like thunder and the ground began to crack. A big hole opened up next to the apple tree.

“What’s happening?” screamed the frightened girl. She tried to move but it was too late. She  links of london and the tree slid through the hole and tumbled over and over towards the watery world below.

“Help me! Help me!” screamed the girl. Luckily two swans were swimming below and saw the girl tumbling down from the sky.

“Come on!” yelled one swan. “Let’s catch her links of london necklaces before she hits the water”
“Okay!” yelled the other.

The swans spread their wings together and caught the girl on their soft feather backs.

“Whew! That was lucky” said the girl. “But what do I do now? I can’t get back up to the Sky World and I can’t stay on your backs forever.

“We’ll take you to Big turtle” said the swans. “He knows everything”.

After hearing what happened, the Big Turtle called all the animals in the water world to a meeting. He told them an old story about soil being found deep under the water.

“If we can get some of that soil, we can build an island on my back for you to live on” said the Big Turtle. “Sounds good to me” said the young girl.

The Otter, Beaver and Muskrat started arguing over who would dive for the soil.

“I’ll go” said the sleek Otter, brushing his glossy fur.

“No! I’ll go” said Beaver, slapping the water with his big links of londonflat tail.

“I’m the best swimmer” said Muskrat “I’ll go.”

“Aaaachooo!” sneezed the young girl. “Guys, guys, would just one of you go. These swan feathers are getting up my nose and making me sneeze”.
“Sorry” said the swans.

“That’s alright” said the young Sky girl.

Then Toskwaye the little Toad, popped up out of links of london earrings the water. “I’ll go. I can dive very deep” she said.

The other animals started laughing and pointing at Toskwaye. “You! You’re too small and ugly to help”. cried the others, laughing.

“Be quite!” said Big Turtle in a loud, stern voice.
“Everyone is equal and everyone will have a chance to try”.

The sleek Otter smoothed his glossy fur, took a deep breath and slid into the water. He was gone for a long time before he came up gasping for air.

“It was too deep” he said. “I couldn’t dive that far.

“Now it’s my turn” said  links of london Beaver. He slapped the water with his tail as he disappeared. After a long time he came to the surface again.

“It’s too far” he gasped. “No one can dive that deep.”

Muskrat tried next and failed. “Aaaachoo!” sneezed the young girl. “This is not looking good”

“Now it’s my turn” said little Toskwaye the Toad. She took a deep breath and jumped into the water. She was gone a very long time and everyone thought they wouldn’t see her again.

Suddenly Otter pointed at the water, shouting “Look, look! Bubbles!”

Toskwaye’s small, ugly face appeared through the water. She spat a few grains of soil onto the Big Turtle’s back, then fell back into the water – dead. The Turtle ordered the others to rub the soil grains and spread them around on his shell. The grains grew and grew, until a large island was formed – big enough  links of londonor the girl to live on.

It grew into our world as we know it today. And the descendants of the Sky girl became the Earth’s people.

Today, some people say the whole world still rests on Big Turtles back. When he gets tired and changes his position, we have earthquakes.

Toad has not been forgotten either. American native Indians call her “Mashutaha”, which means ‘Our Grandmother’. No one is allowed to harm her.

Sukhu and Dukhu

Sunday, July 18th, 2010

A man had two wives and had a daughter by each of them. Dukhu was the daughter of the elder wife and Sukhu was the daughter of the links of london younger. The man loved his younger wife and her daughter

Sukhu more than the older wife and her daughter Dukhu. The daughters’ natures were just like their mothers’. Sukhu was as lazy and ill-tempered as Dukhu was active and lovable. Furthermore, Sukhu and her mother hated the other two and treated them badly anytime they had the chance.

The man took ill, and died in spite of every kind of treatment. The younger wife inherited all his property, and she drove Dukhu and her mother out of the house.

Dukhu and her mother found an empty hut outside town and occupied it. They made a living by spinning thread. One day when Dukhu was spinning outside her hut, the wind blew hard and carried away her wad of cotton. She ran after it but couldn’t catch up with it. When she began to cry in desperation, she heard a voice in the wind, “Don’t cry, Dukhu, come with me. I’ll give you all the cotton you want.”

So she followed the wind. On the way, she met a cow, which spoke to her: “Not so fast, Dukhu. My shed is covered with dung. Wash it clean links of london  necklace for me, and I’ll help you later.”

Dukhu drew water from the well and got herself a broom and washed the cowshed clean as clean could be. The wind was waiting for her to finish. As soon as she finished, she went with the wind again. They came to a plantain tree, which stopped her and said, “Where are you going, Dukhu? Can’t you stop a minute and pull down all these creepers from my body so that I can stand up straight? It’s hard to stand bent down like this all day and all night. Please.”

“I’ll be glad to do that,” said Dukhu, and she tore links of london jewellery down all the creepers that were smothering the tree.

The tree said, “You’re a good girl. I’ll help you some other time.”

“I didn’t do anything special, really,” said Dukhu and hurried on, for the wind was waiting for her.

Next she met a horse and it said, “Where are you going, Dukhu? This saddle and bridle cut into me. I can’t bend down to eat the grass. Will you please take them off for me?”

Dukhu took off the saddle and bridle. The horse was grateful and promised her a gift.

The wind said, as they moved on, “Do you see that palace there? That’s where the Mother of the Moon lives. She can give you as much cotton links of london bracelet as you want.” With that, he left her there.

Dukhu walked towards the palace. It seemed deserted. She felt afraid and lonely. She stood there in front of it for a while and then decided to go in. Timidly, step by step, she walked through the rooms. Not a mouse stirring, not a living soul anywhere. Suddenly she heard a noise behind a closed door. She went up to it and knocked softly. A voice said, “Come in.”

Dukhu pushed the door open and saw an old lady working at a wheel. She was luminous as if the moon was specially shining on her.

Dukhu bowed to her, touched her feet and said, “Granny, the wind blew away all my cotton. If I don’t spin, my mother and I will links of london earrings starve. Will you give me some cotton?”

“I’ll give you something better than cotton,” said the old Mother of the Moon, “if you are deserving. Do you see that pond out there? Go to that pond and dip in it twice. Only twice, not three times, remember.”

So Dukhu walked out of the palace and went to the pond and took a dip. When she rose out of the water, she had been changed into someone very beautiful. When she took a second dip, she was covered with silks, pearls, and gems. Her sari was muslin, and she had gold necklaces so heavy that they weighed her down. She couldn’t believe what was happening to her.

When she ran back to the palace, the old woman said, “Child, I know you are hungry. Go to the next room. I’ve food there for you.”

The next room had food of every kind, the best rice, the finest curries, sweets beyond her dreams. After eating her fill, she went back to the old woman, who said, “I want to give you something more,” and showed her three caskets, each bigger than the next. “Choose one,” she said. Dukhu links of london chose the smallest one and said good-bye to the old woman and left the palace.

As she retraced her steps, she met the horse, the plantain tree, and the cow. Each wanted to give her a gift to take home with her. The horse gave her a young colt of the finest breed; the tree gave her a bunch of plantains yellow as gold and a pot full of old gold coins; and the cow gave her a tawny calf whose udders would never be dry.

Dukhu thanked them all for their wonderful gifts, seated herself on the colt with the pot of gold and the plantains, and found her way home, with the calf walking close behind her.

The Close Alliance

Sunday, July 18th, 2010

One day a farmer went with his bullocks to plough his field. He had just turned the first furrow, when a tiger walked up to him and said, “Peace be with you, friend! How are you this fine links of london morning?”

“The same to you, my lord, and I am pretty well, thank you!” returned the farmer, quaking with fear, but thinking it wisest to be polite.

“I am glad to hear it,” replied the tiger cheerfully, “because Providence has sent me to eat your two bullocks. You are a God-fearing man, I know, so make haste and unyoke them.”

“My friend, are you sure you are not making a mistake?” asked the farmer, whose courage had returned now that he knew it was merely a question of gobbling up bullocks, “because Providence sent me to plough this field, and, in order to plough, one must have oxen. Had you not better go and make further inquiries?”

“There is no occasion for delay, and I should be sorry to keep you waiting,” returned the tiger. “If you’ll unyoke the bullocks I’ll be ready in a moment.” With that the savage creature fell to sharpening his teeth and claws links of london in a very significant manner.

But the farmer begged and prayed that his oxen might not be eaten, and promised that if the tiger would spare them, he would give in exchange a fine fat young milch cow, which his wife had tied up in the yard at home.

To this the tiger agreed, and, taking the oxen with him, the farmer went sadly homewards. Seeing him return so early Links of London braceletfrom the fields, his wife, who was a stirring, busy woman, called out, “What! lazybones!– back already, and my work just beginning!”

Then the farmer explained how he had met the tiger, and how to save the bullocks he had promised the milch cow in exchange. At this the wife began to cry, saying, “A likely story, indeed!–saving your stupid old bullocks at the expense of my beautiful cow! Where will the children get milk? and how can I cook my pottage and collops without butter?”

“All very fine, wife,” retorted the farmer, “but how can we make bread without corn? and how can you have corn without bullocks  links of london to plough the fields? Pottage and collops are very nice, but it is better to do without milk and butter than without bread, so make haste and untie the cow.”

“You great gaby!” wept the wife, “if you had an ounce of sense in your brain you’d think of some plan to get out of the scrape!”

“Think yourself!” cried the husband, in a rage.

“Very well!” returned the wife; “but if I do the thinking you must obey orders; I can’t do both. Go back to the tiger, and tell him the cow wouldn’t come along with you, but that your wife is bringing it.”

The farmer, who was a great coward, didn’t half like the idea of going back empty-handed to the tiger, but as he could think of no other plan he did as he was bid, and found the beast still sharpening his teeth and claws for very hunger; and when he heard he had to wait still longer for his dinner, he began to prowl about, and lash his tail, and curl his whiskers, in a most terrible manner, causing the poor farmer’s knees to knock together with terror.

Now, when the farmer had left the house, his wife went to the stable and saddled the pony; then she put on her husband’s best clothes, tied the turban very high, so as to make her look as tall as possible, bestrode the pony, and set off to the field where the tiger was.

She rode along, swaggering and blustering, till she came to where the lane turned into the field, and then she called out, as bold as brass, “Now, please the powers! I may find a tiger in this place; for I haven’t tasted tiger’s meat since links of london friendship bracelet yesterday, when, as luck would have it, I ate three for breakfast.”

Hearing these words, and seeing the speaker ride boldly at him, the tiger became so alarmed that he turned tail, and bolted into the forest, going away at such a headlong pace that he nearly overturned his own jackal; for tigers always have a jackal of their own, who, as it were, waits at table and clears away the bones.

“My lord! my lord!” cried the jackal, “whither away so fast?”

“Run! run!” panted the tiger, “there’s the very devil of a horseman in yonder fields, who thinks nothing of eating three tigers for breakfast!”

At this the jackal sniggered in his  links of londonsleeve. “My dear lord,” said he, “the sun has dazzled your eyes! That was no horseman, but only the farmer’s wife dressed up as a man!”

“Are you quite sure?” asked the tiger, pausing.

“Quite sure, my lord,” repeated the jackal, “and if your lordship’s eyes had not been dazzled by–ahem!–the sun, your lordship would have seen her pigtail hanging down behind.”

“But you may be mistaken!” persisted the cowardly tiger, “it was the very devil of a horseman to look at!”

“Who’s afraid?” replied the brave jackal. “Come! don’t give up your dinner because of a woman!”

“But you may be bribed to betray me!” argued the tiger, who, like all cowards, was suspicious.

“Let us go together, then!” returned the gallant jackal.

“Nay! but you may take me there links of london necklaces and then run away!” insisted the tiger cunningly.

“In that case, let us tie our tails together, and then I can’t!” The jackal, you see, was determined not to be done out of his bones.

To this the tiger agreed, and having tied their tails together in a reef-knot, the pair set off arm-in-arm.

Now the farmer and his wife had remained in the field, laughing over the trick she had played on the tiger, when, lo and behold! what should they see but the gallant pair coming back ever so bravely, with their tails tied together.

“Run!” cried the farmer, “we are lost! we are lost!”

“Nothing of the kind, you great fool!” answered his wife coolly, “if you will only stop that noise and be quiet. I can’t hear myself speak!”

Then she waited till the pair were within hail, when she called out politely, “How very kind of you, dear Mr. Jackal, to bring me such a nice fat tiger! I shan’t be a moment finishing my share of him, and then you can have the bones.”

At these words the tiger became wild with fright, and, quite forgetting the jackal, and that reef-knot in their tails, he bolted away full tilt, dragging the jackal behind him. Bumpety, bump, bump, over the stones!–crash, scratch, patch, through the briars!

In vain the poor jackal howled and shrieked to the tiger to stop,–the noise behind him only frightened the coward more; and away he went, helter-skelter, hurry-scurry, over hill and dale, till he was nearly dead with links of london earrings fatigue, and the jackal was quite dead from bumps and bruises.

Rabindranath Tagore

Saturday, July 10th, 2010

Mystic, painter and Nobel laureate for literature, Rabindranath Tagore was a prolific writer (3,000 poems, 2,000 songs, 8 novels, 40 volumes of essays and short stories, 50 plays), who drew inspiration both from his native Bengal and from English literary tradition. His major theme was humanity’s search for God and truth. He was awarded links of london  the Nobel Prize in Literature for his collection of well-known poems Gitanjali (Song Offerings).

Born in Calcutta on May 7, 1861, Rabindranath was the youngest of fourteen children. His father, Debendranath Tagore, was a Sanskrit scholar and a leading member of  links of london earrings the Brahmo Samaj. Rabindranath’s early education was imparted at home. In school, while others use to learn their lessons, he would slip into more exciting world of dreams. Inspired by his older nephew, he wrote his first poem when he was hardly seven. At the age of seventeen, his first book of poems was published.

From 1878 to 1880 Tagore studied law in England, and in 1890, having returned to India, he took charge of his father’s estates, where he saw firsthand the suffering and backwardness of India’s rural poor and grew to love the serenity of the Indian countryside. Devotinglinks of london  himself to the agricultural development of the land and the health and education of the people, he founded, in 1901, Santiniketan (“Abode of Peace”), which became an international university with a wide-ranging curriculum. He was knighted in 1915, an honor he renounced four years later as a protest against the Jallianwala Bagh massacre by the British in India.

Tagore was keenly aware of India’s socio-political condition under British rule. He supported the Swadeshi movement and had been deeply influenced by the religious renaissance of 19th century India. Coming out strongly against orthodox rituals he wrote, “Leave this chanting and singing and telling of beads! Whom dost than worship in this lonely dark corner of a temple with doors all shut? Open thine eyes and seelinks of london thy God is not before thee!” (Verse 11, Gitanjali)

Tragically, between 1902 and 1907, Tagore lost his wife, son and daughter. But out of his pain emerged some of his most tender work, including Gitanjali, published in 1910. Tagore  links of london earrings remained a true patriot, supporting the national movement and writing the lyrics of the “Jana Gana Mana”, which is India’s national anthem.

Between 1916 and 1941, Tagore published 21 collections of songs and poems and held lecture tours across Europe, the Americas, China, Japan, Malaya and Indonesia. In 1924, he links of london necklaces inaugurated the Viswa Bharati University at Santiniketan, an All India Centre for links of london  culture. Tagore died in Calcutta on 7th August 1941.

Tagore’s works are classics, renowned for their lyrical beauty and spiritual poignancy. He is remembered for his literary genius and Santiniketan remains flourishing institute. In Tagore’s own words, “The world speaks to me in colours, my soul answers in music”.

His profound symbolism, abetted by the free-flowing  links of london necklaces nature of his verse, create a universe of haunting beauty that expresses God’s infinite love and humanity’s deep compassion for all things beautiful.

Broken Wing

Friday, July 9th, 2010

Some people are links of london just doomed to be failures. That’s the way some adults look at troubled kids. Maybe you’ve heard the saying, “A bird with a broken wing will never fly as high.” I’m sure that T. J. Ware was made to feel this way almost every day in school.

By high school, T. J. was the most celebrated troublemaker in his town. Teachers literally cringed when they saw his name posted on their classroom lists for the next semester. He wasn’t very links of london bracelet talkative, didn’t answer questions and got into lots of fights. He had flunked almost every class by the time he entered his senior year, yet was being passed on each year to a higher grade level. Teachers didn’t want to have him again the following year. T. J. was moving on, but definitely not moving up. I met T. J. for the first time at a weekend leadership retreat. All the students at school had been invited to sign up for ACE training, a program links of london designed to have students become more involved in their communities. T. J. was one of 405 students who signed up. When I showed up to lead their first retreat, the community leaders gave me this overview of the attending students: “We have a total spectrumlinks of london braceletrepresented today, from the student body president to T. J. Ware, the boy with the longest arrest record in the history of town.” Somehow, I knew that I wasn’t the first to hear about T. J.’s darker side as the first words of introduction.

At the start of the retreat, T. J. was literally standing outside the circle of students, against the back wall, with that “go ahead, impress me” look on his face. He didn’t readily join the discussion groups, didn’t seem to have much to say. But slowly, the interactive games drew him in. The ice really melted when the groups started building a list oflinks of london positive and negative things that had occurred at school that year. T.
