528-Pound Woman Gives Birth to First Child

Monday, September 20th, 2010

BUCHAREST, Romania  —  A 25-year-old woman weighing 528 pounds gave birth to her first baby on Thursday at links of london a hospital equipped to treat obese people.

“The baby is the fruit of the love between me and my future husband who is slimmer, weighing just 154 pounds,” said Victoria Lacatus.

“I wanted this child with all my heart, whatever the sacrifice,” the Adevarul newspaper quoted her links of london bangles  as saying.

The healthy baby girl, born by Caesarean section, weighed 6.4 pounds, said Bogdan Popescu, a spokesman at Bucharest University Emergency Hospital.

Lacatus was admitted there from her village in southern Romania because the local hospital did not have any beds that could bear her weight, officials said. In Bucharest, three teams of ambulance staff and firefighters were needed to carry her into the hospital.

Popescu said Lacatus was being links of london charms carefully monitored because she suffers from a thyroid problem and doctors said post-surgery complications could develop because of her morbid obesity.

Dr. Manny Alvarez, managing health editor of FoxNews.com, said pregnancy risks in obese women include high blood pressure, deep vein thrombosis, miscarriage, and respiratory problems.

Alvarez said it would be difficult to monitor the health and movement of the baby in this links of london bracelet kind of case because an ultrasound would be limited.

“I think in this case, even though it is being reported as an interesting story with a good outcome, it is far from ideal,” Alvarez said. “Someone in this position would really need to try to lose weight before becoming pregnant. Patients with this kind of weight that get weight-loss surgery . . . once they do that, those patients do far better than patients who weigh 500-pounds.”

Lacatus said she will soon marry her 36-year-old fiance, Costica Lacatus.

“It was a real challenge because she needed four times the anesthetic a normal person needs,” said links of London necklaces Florin Costandache, who helped perform the operation.

The chief surgeon, obstetrician Valeriu Horhoianu, said at least 10 obese women have given birth at the Bucharest hospital, but they all weighed less than 352 pounds.

In August 2008, a heavier obese woman — 560-pound Leanne Salt — gave birth to triplets in Britain.

But Nicolae Cernea, a doctor from the southern city of Craiova — where Lacatus was hospitalized for a month links of london before delivery — said her case was unique in Romania.

The country’s media, which closely followed the case, seemed to agree.

Hunks get more sex, but there’s a price to pay

Friday, September 17th, 2010

Skinny men have new reason to celebrate. Well, kind of. Beefcakes may be able to attract women by rippling their links of london muscles, but the downside of all that brawn is a poor immune system and an increased appetite, a new study finds.

Such evolutionary costs could explain why males of our species do not all look like He-Man, according to William Lassek, an evolutionary psychologist at the University of links of london earrings Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, who led the new study. “In some respects I was surprised at how big the costs were… something I hadn’t anticipated,” he says.

Sex boost

Many other studies have shown that women tend to prefer more toned men, and muscle-bound men tend to have more sexual partners than slender men, when other factors are controlled for.

Previous research has also suggested that musculature comes with a cost. Testosterone, a hormone links of london friendship bracelet that promotes secondary muscle growth, suppresses the immune system of all animals, including people.

Yet no one had examined both the positives and negatives of big muscles in a single population, says Lassek, who analysed data from more than 5000 men, aged 18 to 49, who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, between 1988 and 1994.

The beefier the man – measured by total fat-free mass, or arm and leg muscle mass – the more sexual links of london bangles partners he had, Lassek confirmed. The study also showed that more muscled men tended to lose their virginity at a younger age, compared to skinny men.

Hunger pangs

Yet in the same men, muscles didn’t come free. Muscle mass did a better job of predicting caloric intake than body mass index (BMI), age, or activity levels. A larger appetite may not seem like a cost in modern western societies, with a restaurant or grocer on every corner. But ancient humans struggled to get  links of london all the calories their bodies needed at times, Lassek says, which could have meant hunky men going hungry more often.

Compared to skinnies, muscular men also tended to produce fewer infection-fighting white blood cells and less of an important immune molecule called C-reactive links of london necklaces protein, which helps destroy pathogens.

Together, the pluses of sexual benefits and minuses of the energetic costs of being beefy may even out in the end, explaining why men of all shapes and sizes thrive, Lassek contends.

A new Swedish study shows that a healthy emotional and sexual relationship can significantly reduce links of london stress at work.

Ann-Christine Andersson Arntén is a psychology doctoral student from the University of Gothenburg. She conducted a five-year-long study on the effects of partner relations on work stress. Andersson Arntén said that people’s home lives can either help alleviate stress at work or push people over the links of london necklaces edge.

“Either you come home to something that gives you a possibility to rewind and recover or you have a relationship that makes you more troubled,” she told The Local.

“If that’s the case than you cannot recover, and your whole system physically and mentally will become unbalanced. It will start to become more and more unhealthy and could end up in depression, anxiety, or sleeping links of london earrings problems.”

About 900 male and female participants completed surveys in which they were asked to categorize their relationship in one of three categories: good, average, and bad.

They were then asked to rate whether their relationship had a positive or negative effect on their work life. The results for women were as expected. Women in good relationships had less stress at work, and ones in bad relationships had more work links of london charms stress. However, the surprise finding was in the men’s group.

“With men we found the average group experienced the most stress-related problems at work,” Andersson Arntén explained.

“When we talked to the men, they said that when it’s in-between, you have to put more effort into it. You keep doing that until the relationship either becomes better links of london bracelets  or hopeless. When you get to that point, it doesn’t really affect your health anymore.”

The study also found that men were often more interested in the frequency of sex than women, who were more inclined to value the quality of sexual relations.

Andersson Arntén said the survey results also dismiss the myth that men completely separate work life and  links of london private life. She said that men are not the only ones who can benefit from the results of the study.

Where Does Sex Live in the Brain? From Top to Bottom

Sunday, September 12th, 2010

On April 11, 1944, a doctor named T. C. Erickson addressed the Chicago Neurological Society about a links of london patient he called Mrs. C. W. At age 43 she had started to wake up many nights feeling as if she were having sex—or as she put it to Erickson, feeling “hot all over.” As the years passed her hot spells struck more often, even in the daytime, and began to be followed by seizures that left her unable to speak. Erickson examined Mrs. C. W. when she was 54 and diagnosed her with nymphomania. He prescribed a links of london earrings treatment that was shockingly common at the time: He blasted her ovaries with X-rays.

Despite the X-rays, Mrs. C. W.’s seizures became worse, leaving her motionless and feeling as if an egg yolk were running down her throat. Erickson began to suspect that her sexual feelings were emanating not from her ovaries but from her head. Doctors opened up her skull and discovered a slow-growing tumor pressing against her brain. After the tumor was removed and links of london friendship bracelet Mrs. C. W. recovered, the seizures faded. “When asked if she still had any ‘passionate spells,’” Erickson recounted, “she said, ‘No, I haven’t had any; they were terrible things.’”

Mrs. C. W.’s experience was rare but not unique. In 1969 two Florida doctors wrote to the journal Neurology about a patient who experienced similar spells of passion. She would beat both hands on her chest and order her husband to satisfy links of london bangles  her. Usually the woman would come to with no memory of what had just happened, but sometimes she would fall to the floor in a seizure. Her doctors diagnosed her with epilepsy, probably brought on by the damage done to parts of her brain by a case of syphilis. More recently, in 2004, doctors in Taiwan described a woman who complained of links of london sweetie bracelets orgasms that swept over her when she brushed her teeth. Shame kept her silent for years, until her episodes also caused her to lose consciousness. When the doctors examined her, they diagnosed her with epilepsy as well, caused by a small patch of damaged brain tissue.

Each of these stories contains a small clue about the enigmatic neuroscience of sex. A hundred links of london charms years ago Sigmund Freud argued that sexual desire was the primary motivating energy in human life. Psychologists and sociologists have since mapped the vast variations in human sexuality. Today pharmaceutical companies make billions bringing new life to old sex organs. But for all the attention that these fields of research have lavished on sex, neuroscientists have lagged far behind. What little they knew came from rare cases  links of london such as Mrs. C. W.’s.

Girls sell sex in Hong Kong to earn shopping money

# Practice is a form of prostitution, Hong Kong legal experts say

# Caseload of girls engaging in practice has doubled in two years, social worker says

# Girls engaging in practice cut across socioeconomic levels, social worker says

HONG KONG, China (CNN) — She doesn’t want to be identified, except by her nickname “Sze,” and she has a links of london bracelets secret past. Her father doesn’t know what she did as a 16-year-old, and she hopes he never finds out. But Sze, now 19, wants young girls to hear her story so they never make the same mistake.

“My first customer was an ordinary man in his 40s. We skipped the dinner part and went straight to the guest house for sex,” Sze recalled. “Actually, I was a bit scared, but I knew this was the only way I could get money. This customer wasn’t bad, though. We just had sex, he paid, and then he left. I thought this was links of london necklaces easy money, and that’s why I continued doing this kind of thing.”

For a year and a half, Sze was part of a growing social phenomenon among teens in Hong Kong called “compensated dating,” a practice in which a young woman agrees to go on a date with a man for a fee. More often than not, the date involves sex.

Sze said she started compensated dating because many of her classmates at an all-girls school were doing it. She says she became jealous when she saw the designer clothes, bags links of london earrings and cosmetics they bought with the money they earned through compensated dating. Sze wanted the same for herself, so her classmates introduced her to Internet chat forums where she met male customers.

The practice can have deadly consequences. Last year, a 16-year-old Hong Kong girl was killed in a links of london charms gruesome murder after she went to a 24-year-old man’s apartment for a compensated date. The man, Ting Kai-Tai, killed the teenager, dismembered her body and flushed the remains down the toilet. A jury convicted him of murder and sentenced him to life in prison.

Sze told CNN she knew a compensated date could go horribly wrong. She would set ground rules with clients on the phone first. She charged them $350 for a date and clarified how many times links of london she would have sex with them.

She said sometimes the customers would stray from the rules, asking for more sex or refusing to wear a condom.

World AIDS Day: a history of an epidemic

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

Today is World AIDS Day. It marks an internationally recognised event aimed at raising awareness about HIV and AIDS around the world. Across the globe, the event is commemorated in a multitude of links of london ways, collectively symbolised by the wearing of red ribbons, a sign of support for those living with HIV.

The red ribbon, one of the most iconic images in use today, has been an international symbol of AIDS awareness since 1991 after the Red Ribbon Project was created by New York-based organisation Visual AIDS.

According to the World AIDS Day website, wearing a red ribbon for World AIDS Day is a “simple and powerful way” to show support and challenge the stigma and prejudice surrounding HIV and AIDS that often links of london earrings   prevents us from tackling HIV in the UK and internationally.

Facing the reality

This year, in the UK, the theme for World AIDS Day focuses on the reality of living with HIV today. The UK campaign uses real people and real situations to present true accounts of how HIV affects people in modern day Britain. It is designed to dispel some of the myths, misinformation, confusion and unwarranted sigma that surrounds HIV.

Outside of the UK, Carla links of london charms  Bruni-Sarkozy, the French first lady, has spoken out today about her work as an AIDS ambassador for The Global Fund. In an interview with BBC television, she explains how it is “unfair” that women and children in the developing world often miss out on treatment for HIV, stressing that much work is needed to help those children who are HIV positive because the virus has been passed on from their mother. Bruni-Sarkozy also cited the British Prime Minster’s wife, Sarah Brown, as an inspiration for her links of london necklaces work on tackling AIDS awareness in the UK.

In New York, award-winning musician Alicia Keys is scheduled to perform a free concert for World AIDS Day tonight. The concert will be broadcast live on the artist’s official YouTube channel and all proceeds from the concert will go to Keys’ charity Keep A Child Alive.

Meanwhile, in Detroit, World AIDS Day will be recognised in a special music program aimed at encouraging links of london bracelet Detroit youth to make correct choices when it comes to health and sex. The Hip-Hop and R&B project, Lifestoryz State of Emergency, is sponsored by the city’s health department, Michigan Department of Community Health, and Wayne County Health Department.

According to reports, participants of the workshop at Detroit’s Northwest Activities Center will get free and confidential HIV testing and various health screenings.

Such moves are just a few links of london  examples of some of the things being implemented today to raise awareness about AIDS and HIV on an international scale.

1/3rd of Women in US Military Raped

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

According to NPR, “In 2003, a survey of female veterans found that 30 percent said they were raped in the military. A 2004 study of veterans who were seeking help for Links of London post-traumatic stress disorder found that 71 percent of the women said they were sexually assaulted or raped while serving. And a 1995 study of female veterans of the Gulf and earlier wars, found that 90 percent links of london necklace had been sexually harassed.”

The BBC recently reported on The Lonely Soldier: The Private War of Women Serving in Iraq by Helen Benedict. This book examines the extreme difficulties female soldiers have in serving abroad. Benedict interviewed several women in the Links of London earrings military to get a deeper understanding of the issue, and some of their stories were real eye openers.

Army specialist Chantelle Henneberry spoke of some of her experiences in Iraq, “Everybody’s supposed to have a battle buddy in the army, and females are links of london charms supposed to have one to go to the latrines with, or to the showers – that’s so you don’t get raped by one of the men on your own side. But because I was the only female there, I didn’t have a battle buddy. My battle buddy was my gun and my knife.”

Another study concluded that 90% of all women serving are sexually harassed. Another one estimates that 90% of all the rapes do not get reported, despite supposedly easier links of london sweetie bracelets ways to report the crime with confidentiality since 2005. Either way, this appears to be an epidemic that needs to be dealt with.

An online discussion from a former soldier whose identity is being protected had this to say, “At least a rape ends. It’s the day-to-day degradation that eats at you. None of my friends who were raped on active duty reported it. Or if we tried, we were told to shut up for ‘morale.’ Working with your Links of London rapist on a daily basis isn’t a lot of fun, believe me.”

7 things women are worried about on a first date

Sunday, September 5th, 2010

1 Who will pay the bill?

Women start stressing about this as soon as you both sit down at the table. Will you be offended if she doesn’t offer to pay (ungrateful bitch!) or will you be links of london offended if she does do the slow-motion “let me get my wallet” move? Put her fears to rest by telling her to order anything she wants (on or off the dollar menu) because this meal is on you.

2 What happens next?

Everything is going super great on the date and you’re happy that J-Date finally pulled through for you. However, she’s debating if you links of london charms expect to come home with her or if you think she’s a giant slut for even thinking that. Make your intentions clear from the outset by subtly sliding a handful of condoms across the table and mouthing “later.”

3 Do I actually like him?

You’re funny, charming, and good-looking in the candle light. As you tell another hilarious story about the time you set you set a pledge on fire in college, she’s trying to decide if she wants to date you. Solve this problem by making her fall in love with you immediately. Instant love can generally be created by links of london earrings making sure she has endless drink refills.

4 Am I making sense?

As she rambles on about co-worker drama and its relationship to problems with her mother, she’s simultaneously asking herself what the fuck she is talking about. She wants to make a good impression– and in an attempt to do so continually finds herself telling stories with no end. Save her the embarrassment by constantly interrupting with your own semi-related stories.

5 What is he looking for?

Whether you went on this date looking for a girlfriend or looking for a one-night stand, you know exactly what you want. Now she’s attempting to links of london sweetie bracelets interpret what you want by over analyzing everything you say. Stop making her read between the lines by spelling it out for her — “my friends dared my $100 to ask you on a date, after this I will never see you again.”

6 What will my friends think?

Women get off on judging each other, especially their very own friends. Even if she is falling madly in love with links of london necklaces you, she’s still thinking about what her friends will say. Assure her that her friends will love you by being extra-good-looking, extra-funny, extra-nice, and extra-rich. It’s truly that easy!

7 Do I still look okay?

She left her house with perfectly straight hair and smudge-free make-up. However you’re now halfway done with your ribs dinner and she’s stressing about what’s in her teeth and how to get that lump of sauce out of her hair links of london without you noticing. Make her feel more comfortable by smearing sauce all over yourself to the point that you’re asked to leave the restaurant for lewd and indecent behavior.

The Gloria Scott

Saturday, September 4th, 2010

I have some papers here,” said my friend Sherlock Holmes, as we sat one winter’s night on either side of links of london the fire, “which I really think, Watson, that it would be worth your while to glance over. These are the documents in the extraordinary case of the Gloria Scott, and this is the message which struck Justice of the Peace Trevor dead with horror when he read it.”
He had picked from a drawer a little tarnished cylinder, and, undoing the tape, he handed me a links of london friendship bracelets note scrawled upon a half-sheet of slate gray-paper.
“The supply of game for London is going steadily up,” it ran. “Head-keeper Hudson, we believe, had been now told to receive all orders for fly-paper and for preservation of your hen-pheasant’s life.”
As I glanced up from reading this enigmatical message, I saw Holmes chuckling at the expression upon my face.
“You look a little bewildered,” said he.
“I cannot see links of london necklace how such a message as this could inspire horror. It seems to me to be rather grotesque than otherwise.”
“Very likely. Yet the fact remains that the reader, who was a fine, robust old man, was knocked clean down by it as if it had been the butt end of a pistol.”
“You arouse my curiosity,” said I. “But why did you say just now that there were very particular reasons why I should study this case?”
“Because it was the first in which I was ever engaged.”
I had often endeavored to elicit from my companion what had first turned is mind in the direction of criminal links of london bracelet research, but had never caught him before in a communicative humor. Now he sat forward in this arm chair and spread out the documents upon his knees. Then he lit his pipe and sat for some time smoking and turning them over.
“You never heard me talk of Victor Trevor?” he asked. “He was the only friend I links of london charms made during the two years I was at college. I was never a very sociable fellow, Watson, always rather fond of moping in my rooms and working out my own little methods of thought, so that I never mixed much with the men of my year. Bar fencing and boxing I had few athletic tastes, and then my line of study was quite distinct from that of the other links of london fellows, so that we had no points of contact at all. Trevor was the only man I knew, and that only through the accident of his bull terrier freezing on to my ankle one morning as I went down to chapel.

The Empty House

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

It was in the spring of the year 1894 that all London was interested, and the fashionable world dismayed, by the murder of the Honourable Ronald Adair under most unusual and Links of London inexplicable circumstances. The public has already learned those particulars of the crime which came out in the police investigation, but a good deal was suppressed upon that occasion, since the case for the prosecution was so overwhelminglystrong that it was not necessary to bring forward all the facts. Only now, at the end of nearly ten years, am I allowed to supply those missing links which make up the whole of Links of London necklace that remarkable chain. The crime was of interest in itself, but that interest was as nothing to me compared to the inconceivable sequel, which afforded me the greatest shock and surprise of any event in my adventurous life. Even now, after this long interval, I find myself thrilling as I think of it, and feeling once more that sudden flood of joy, amazement, and incredulity which utterly submerged my mind. Let me say to that public, which has shown some interest in those glimpses which I have occasionally Links of London rings given them of the thoughts and actions of a very remarkable man, that they are not to blame me if I have not shared my knowledge with them, for I should have considered it my first duty to do so, had I not been barred by a positive prohibition from his own lips, which was only withdrawn upon the third of last month.
It can be imagined that my close links of london charms intimacy with Sherlock Holmes had interested me deeply in crime, and that after his disappearance I never failed to read with care the various problems which came before the public. And I even attempted, more than once, for my own private satisfaction, to employ his methods in their solution, though with indifferent success. There was none, however, which appealed to me like this tragedy of Ronald Adair. As I read the evidence at the inquest, which led up to a verdict of willful murder against some person or persons unknown, I realized more clearly than I had ever done the loss which the community had links of london sweetie bracelet sustained by the death of Sherlock Holmes. There were points about this strange business which would, I was sure, have specially appealed to him, and the efforts of the police would have been supplemented, or more probably anticipated, by the trained observation and the alert mind of the first criminal agent in Europe. All day, as I drove upon my round, I turned over the case in my mind and found no explanation which appeared to me  Links of London  to be adequate. At the risk of telling a twice-told tale, I will recapitulate the facts as they were known to the public at the conclusion of the inquest.
