If we are up to date with our fall fashion, like we should be, we all know that shearling is ‘in’. I mean waaay in style. But just because you are a high end designer with a well-known name, it doesn’t mean that each of your bags will be a hit even if they implement the looks of the season. The Gucci Large Shearling Tote simply does not do it for me. Granted I have not yet seen this bag in person, but from the looks of it the bag does not look beige- rather the color you would see when you open up a baby’s diaper. The entire tote is monogrammed with the Gucci GG logo on the beige shearling and is trimmed in beige leather. This tote is also a pretty nice size: 10 3/4″H x 13 3/4″W x 5 3/4″D, but I’d still really rather pass. I don’t like it as much as the soft leather hobo, but that’s just my personal taste – I’m still impressed with Burberry’s bags for this season.

It has been quite a while since I last discussed a Gucci bag with you. The problem for me is that lately every single Gucci bag has been heinous. I really despise the Gucci Monogram pattern, while I am not much of a monogram fan in general, the Gucci monogram makes me cringe for some reason. Luckily, there is finally a little accessory I do not have to click the X out button really quick on. Purple or black patent leather pulled tight make the Gucci Crystal Evening Bag a stunning accessory. I absolutely love the purple patent leather. The color reminds me of fresh juicy grapes right off the vine. There is a Gucci script detail in the bottom left coroner which is the perfect touch. This thought usually comes up when I pseudo dream of being some high powered executive perhaps working in a city like New York City. You know how the movies portray things. My love for the Burberry check pattern ended a few years ago. I went from love love loving it, to just thinking it was ok, to not liking it much at all. Dubbed the “It Bag of Spring 2008″ the Burberry Warrior has created quite the hype. Seen on the arms of countless celebrities (and all over the set of the hit show Gossip Girl), this bag has taken the handbag world by storm. The bag started its journey on the Burberry runway in beige. Christopher Bailey, the Creative Director of Burberry, cited the Luxury Warrior as his inspiration for spring and this can be seen with his metal stud design used on this bag. The Burberry Warrior implements dark silver stud details on top of black leather. The top features a wide panel with drawstring pulls that go through eyelets to secure. The bag will fit snug on your shoulder. I saw this bag and loved it. It is so refreshing to see something different and eclectic from a brand that you begin to know what to expect. She has that curse, and I would definitely take on that curse if anyone asked me to. But this new little rendition has me in and my opinion will surely not change at any time. Appearing as if it is straight from an episode of That 70′s Show, the Prada Napa Messenger Bag is straight up fugilicious. Sure the Prada name is flung onto this Napa leather bag, but the fringed shoulder strap is a hideous attempt at bringing fringe sexiness back. The only shot they have at making this bag partially appealing is the fact that the fringe shoulder strap is detachable. This means that when the richest of the rich happen to have a dress up 70′s theme party the bag will suit them, and then one day, they can take the monstrosity of a fringe strap off and give it to their pure bred pup as a chew toy.

It seems as though I should have waited another week to write about leopard print as a bag trend – since that post was published, several more enormous brands have made their entrance into the fad, most notable among them Gucci. Over time the trunks have evolved and this month Louis Vuitton is releasing their book: Louis Vuitton: 100 Legendary Trunks. I prefer picture heavy books, and this is precisely what is being presented. The book showcases some of the most beautiful creations from the House with over eight hundred photographs. This way you can see many of the trunks over time, whether it be a trunk-bed, steamer, caviar box, circus trunk, or a toiletry kit to name a few. The book also delves into the process of how Louis Vuitton makes their trunks. As was widely reported last week, luxury giant LVMH now owns over 17% of competitor Hermes, and although the company has publicly stated that it has no plans to acquire more shares of the French family-owned company in the next six months, luxury watchers remain atwitter over what the future may hold for two of the world’s largest names in handbags after that time period expires. Now that more of the story behind LVMH’s share purchases has emerged, Women’s Wear Daily reports that the company used a number of stealth maneuvers, including cash-settle equity swaps and use of several cannily named LVMH subsidiaries, to increase its stake in Hermes by over 14% without identifying itself as a competitor to Hermes brass. Seemingly adding insult to injury, LVMH notified Hermes of these developments only hours before releasing the information to the general public. So not only did Hermes not knowingly sell the shares to LVMH, but LVMH execs also seemed to be well aware that the family wouldn’t have sold, if given all the pertinent information. I don’t need all the extras on my bags, just a bag that does its job but still stands out and grabs attention. And you know what this bag does, it adds that slight shine and glimmer that makes for a perfect metallic bag. There is a snap closure and two inside pockets. Available in anthracite and copper; if I were buying this bag I would most likely opt for copper.

If you could see my face right now, you would see a look of total shock. I can not recall the last few times Gucci has had me yearning or one of their handbags. There was a clutch recently that I liked, but other than that, I always pass by the Gucci store. Seeing the shop in Saks, I walk right past it to Prada. It is a sad day when once avid lovers begin to be completely turned off. But Gucci is trying to get things together for fall, and there are a few handbags that mark the spot. Cameron manages to stay chic while flying. And while this is a great thing, it would be a pain to always have to attempt to look put together, even when you just want to dress down and run and errand or two

I actually took a class on review writing in college. Yep, they teach you that in journalism school. If you’re lucky, anyway – it was pretty hard to get in to. We reviewed all kinds of things, from restaurants to plays, and did lots of exercises to make us better reviewers – things like reviewing oranges and writing TV show reviews the length of a Twitter message. And the one big takeaway I got from that class was this: reviews of things you like are hard to write. Reviews of things that suck? They write themselves. Which is why I feel like I’m cheating by writing about the Gucci Original Backpack. Whiskey. Tango. Foxtrot. I mean, look at this thing, y’all. It’s been out for a while, I’ve seen it in personal multiple times…and I just don’t think it’s cute. At all. It’s oddly shaped and confusing to look at and I haven’t wanted a backpack as a purse since mini-backpacks were in style when I was approximately nine years old. I had a pleather one, and I wore it to school very excitedly. But that was 1994, and this is 2009, and I feel like we should have progressed since then. Gucci is trying to hold you back – don’t let them! Hermes Bag There are a lot of reasons that Marc Jacobs’ shows are fun – the front-row celebrities, the unexpected set designs, the crazy tales that emerge from the after-parties – but from a style point of view, they’re fascinating because we never know where Marc will turn next, but wherever he goes, the majority of the fashion world will go with him in a few months’ time. Particularly for accessories enthusiasts, Jacobs’ handbag vision will play out far and wide across the industry, culminating in his Louis Vuitton show in Paris and starting last night with Marc Jacobs Fall 2011. Not only did the tailored, constricted feel of the clothes represent a full 180 from the loose, flowing colors of Jacobs’ Spring 2011 presentation, but the two types of bags within the collection were almost diametrically opposed to each other. On one end, we had fluffy, shapeless, polka-dotted bags that looked like they had been made out of someone’s bathrobe, and on the other, uber-structured, ladylike handbags that felt both current and wearable. For such a strong, severe collection, the bathrobe bags seemed like something of a joke. Let’s hope that they were and we’ll only see the others in stores come fall.

My family is very health-conscious. When I was growing up, not one kid in the lunch room ever wanted to trade lunch items with me. Why? Because they had a Twinkie and I had cut up green pepper sticks. I was that kid, but I didn’t care. If you’ve never seen the windows at an Hermes flagship store, I would highly recommend making it a priority if you’re ever in New York City, London or Paris. The brand’s designers and merchandisers go to great lengths to make the visual presentation of the store’s goods captivating and unique, and the Paris store at 24, Faubourg Saint Honoré in particular has seasonal windows that are the stuff of legend. Hermes Window Design Director Leïla Menchari has done a nearly magical job of turning displays of handbags and silk scarves into fantastical dreamscapes that sit right at the intersection of art and commerce, season after season, for more than three decades. Hermes recently uploaded more than 50 photos of Menchari’s Paris windows to its Facebook page, and we’ve got our picks for the best after the jump. As of late I have been finding more reasons to love Burberry. Their leather bags continue to not only be fashionable and current but also affordable. And now I found a new Burberry bag that I want so badly to like but can’t help but look at it and see jean pockets. I know many designers put two pockets on the front of their bags. This is nothing new. But there are times when I see a bag with pockets on the front that has me feeling like I am staring at a pair of jeans. And I am not sure the belted top detail helps the Burberry Tumbled Leather Tote look less like half a torso of someones body. Nevertheless, the bag still has many likable features. Replica Gucci Oh, thank you God, finally. My handbags prayers have been answered. Because Prada has made some questionable handbags lately, and for a designer so known for their bags, it was getting kind of discouraged. The Prada St. Pitone Tote is not my favorite bag that I’ve ever seen, but it’s a strong improvement over the randomly bedazzled bags we’ve seen from the brand lately. The tote takes a cue from their diffusion Miu Miu line’s very successful Bow Satchel with its side adornment, although this tote’s finishing is a little looser and softer. Combine that with a beautiful, large-scale python skin and and some cute top handles, and Prada’s got a great satchel on their hands that will likely sell very well for them. Now if only they’d get away from that habit of sticking random stuff to their bags that has grown so tiresome.

It’s always disappointing when the handbags are the least impressive part of any collection, but with a line as inventive and exciting as Prada Spring 2011, I guess something had to get the short shrift. The collection’s shoes (which you can check out over at TalkShoes) were the best of the season thus far, but the handbags left a bit to be desired for luxury lovers. In keeping with the trends we’ve seen in Milan so far, Prada went for bright colors and multihued designs. Most of the stripes came on a canvas background, and I’ll be interested to see if any of those bags are translated to leather for retail. In fact, if the bags had been made of leather from the outset instead of featuring so much canvas, my take on the collection would be lightyears more positive – I just can’t get excited for high-priced cotton, even though I think the aesthetic ideas are strong and interesting. The first time that I scrolled past the Prada Tessuto & Ricamo Tote, I was entirely sure that it was Valentino. We all know that drawstring bucket bags are a huge trend for spring and summer, so we thought we would examine the bag that created the genre: the Louis Vuitton Noe Bag. Ladies, I have to tell you, I had a great weekend. I was lucky enough to get to meet about a dozen of our wonderful Atlanta-area (and beyond!) Purse Forum members this past Sunday, and I couldn’t ask for a group of nicer, more awesome handbag-loving ladies. We all had a wonderful lunch, and then a few of us ventured over to Saks for some shopping (or, in my case, drooling – I left everything but money for lunch at home to stave off temptation), and we hit the jackpot inside the Saks Louis Vuitton boutique. The first rare treasure that I saw was the trend-setting Louis Vuitton Stephen Sprouse leopard print cashmere-silk stole. When I saw this online when it first came out, I couldn’t help but think, “Uh, it’s…just a scarf. Kind of a big scarf, but for $725, I’m going to need miles of scarf.” Well, sometimes, things just don’t show up as glorious online as they do in person, because this thing is beautiful. It’s much wider than the average pashmina, and it lit up my outfit of black empire-waist top and skinny jeans as soon as I wrapped it around my neck. It felt lush and luxurious, like I would happily wrap it around myself every single cold day of the year. I don’t like it as much as the soft leather hobo, but that’s just my personal taste – I’m still impressed with Burberry’s bags for this season.
