Considering last season’s retro-leaning accessories collection and the current trend climate, I expected another line of referential, staid handbags from the Italian brand during its recent presentation in Milan; I was dead wrong. Not only were the clothes bright, bold and more than a tad tropical, but the bags were sexy statement-makers in exotics, metallics and intricate woven leather. Naturally, my favorites were the big carry-all satchels like the one at left. The Gucci Boston Bag is seen as one of the iconic bags from the house of Gucci. The first time that I scrolled past the Prada Tessuto & Ricamo Tote, I was entirely sure that it was Valentino. Partly that’s because of the difficulty of photographing the details of a bag like this, but partly (or maybe mostly), it’s because it really LOOKS like some of the Valentino bags we’ve seen recently. Incredibly intricate, shiny, flower-themed…that’s kind of their thing. And it’s really not Prada‘s thing – their aesthetic is much more streamlined and modern, particularly in the bag department. And the more I look at it, the clearer it becomes that Miuccia should have left this to her Italian compatriots. The sequins-and-nylon setup they’ve got going on here just isn’t working, not even a little. Valentino does a great job with this gimmick because there is order in the bags’ chaos; the Prada version just looks like someone dumped a bag of black sequins on it. Considering the price tag, I’d look elsewhere if you’re interested in a similar style. Finally. Someone at Gucci has thrown out a life preserver to save their Resort 2008 collection from complete irrelevancy, and that life preserver is the Sukey Large Python Tote. We’ve spoken previously about the fake-tattoo-covered shortcomings of the 2008 group of bags, and they aren’t pretty. The Python Sukey, however, is nothing short of gorgeous. The reason that it works so well is that the shape of the bag is extremely simple and the surface of the python skin is unmarred by exterior pockets, decorative doo-dads, and unnecessary seaming. The python skin itself takes center stage, and the beautiful combination of cream, tan, and brown scales make a perfect fall bag, even for a girl that isn’t that enthusiastic about brown in any form. The fact is, I love the bag but was not sure it is for me. My SA has had me try it on before and as I have been speaking with my SA we have realized that my next purchase should be a Lindy. The Hermes Lindy has become a house favorite as it offers a more casual feel with every sophisticated touch Hermes is known for. The Lindy features a double sided compartment for ease of separation and use, along with a center that collapses in while being carried. Last week in Saks Vlad and I saw a woman wearing a casual sundress paired with a Graphite Lindy. Everything about her outfit and look was perfect, and the Lindy truly finished it off! While I meticulously pick which color is good for me, I still have a dream Lindy, my holy-grail of Lindy’s. The Hermes Crocodile Lindy is what I call 100% drool worthy. Matte crocodile from the house of Hermes is divine, as it ages it develops the perfect gloss. The Lindy above is graphite 30 Lindy in ultra-supple matte niloticus crocodile. I can not control my love of the handbag when I see it, for every part of me wants it. But the closest I will get to that bag now is in my dreams, because the price is out of my budget. So while I carefully pick my next Hermes bag purchase, I will continue to yearn for the ‘too-expensive-right-now’ Hermes Crocodile Lindy.

The most recognized shape from Louis Vuitton is their Speedy, a very iconic bag to the brand. And following the Speedy in popularity is the classic Louis Vuitton Alma. The Alma is one of my favorite bags from Louis Vuitton. The shape is as distinctive as they come in the handbag world. It is a true handheld bag which is perfect for the working woman or the trendy gal. Per usual, the Alma has been recreated in every rendition possible, from tacky to stunning. And then there was the ultra pricey Chanel Bicycle, which features two quilted flap bags and a jewelry roll behind the seat, all of which are detachable and can be used as individual shoulder bags for a whopping $17,000 (though the two flap bags and jewelry roll is a nice addition). So now I introduce you to the Gucci Cruiser Bicycle, a bike whose price range fits in between the Hermes and Chanel bikes. This is another cruiser sporting Gucci accents all over. I will tell you what, I am not running out to splurge on this bike. And of all of the designer bicycles, I would opt for the Hermes, because it is the CHEAPEST.

I’ve been having an animal print moment lately, and I’m not sure why. Maybe it started several months ago when I saw that gorgeous Stephen Sprouse for Louis Vuitton leopard print scarf, or maybe some innate part of me just wants to spruce up the sheer enormity of my collection of black clothes (last count of black day dresses: over a dozen).
