ASIC has asked the NSW Supreme Court to disqualify David Hobbs and eight other individuals and offshore companies from managing corporations and operating managed investment funds, after they allegedly attracted $US42 million ($45 million) from local investors.

The corporate regulator also asked the court to LOUIS VUITTON Handbags appoint a liquidator to wind up the funds.

The funds allegedly targeted Australian investors and self managed superannuation funds, promising no risk for monthly returns of between three and four per cent, ASIC said in a statement.

More than 700 Australians invested over $US42 million in ten funds since 2002, and were attracted by promises they would gain a stake in offshore investment companies, ASIC said.
“In fact, investors’ funds were dispersed to various off-shore accounts including in New Zealand, Hong Kong, and the US and some were used, as in a ponzi scheme, to pay monthly returns to other investors,” ASIC said.

Only a portion of investors’ funds were actually invested and, contrary to the promises made, these funds were used to trade high risk commodities, futures and options in the US, ASIC alleged.

The commission alleges that Mr Hobbs, of Nelson, in New Zealand, controlled the operation of all 14 funds, which include Integrity Plus Unit Trust operated by P.J.C.B. International and Prestige Unit Trust and Smart Money operated by Geneva Financial.

The proceedings name 19 defendants. ASIC also is seeking court orders that Mr Hobbs, his wife Jacqueline Hobbs, Min Hua Li, of Lugarno, NSW, and David Collard, of Peakhurst, NSW, also pay a financial penalty.

The court proceedings are listed again on June 11.

Obama will have dinner with heads of government from 11 countries — Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia.

The highlight of the two-day trip is the new treaty with Russia, which is another step in nuclear arms relations between the former Cold War adversaries. Its signing comes two days after the Obama administration announced a new U.S. nuclear weapons policy and four days before Obama convenes a summit of 47 nations on nuclear security issues.

“It significantly reduces missiles and launchers,” Obama said of the new treaty, which lasts for 10 years. “It puts in place a strong and effective verification regime. And it maintains the flexibility that we need to protect and advance our national security, and to guarantee our unwavering commitment to the security of our allies.”

Obama has made nuclear nonproliferation a major priority of his presidency, prompting criticism from conservatives who fear the president will weaken the U.S. nuclear deterrent against possible attack.10luoyuejun0409
